The COVID-19 pandemic highlights why staying connected through broadband is essential. To this end, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai started the Keep Americans Connected Initiative.

By taking the Keep America Connected Pledge, mobile and internet service providers agree for the next 60 days to:
- not terminate service to any residential customers because of their inability to pay their bills due to disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic;
- waive any late fees that any residential customers incur because of their economic circumstances related to the coronavirus pandemic; and
- open Wi-Fi hotspots to any American who needs them.
Below is a sample of what mobile and internet service providers are doing to keep Virginians connected:
- Atlantic Broadband
- Introducing a low-cost 15 MBPS broadband plan for new residential customers, free for the first two months
- Free Wi-Fi Hotspots
- AT&T
- 60 days of free data for certain school-issued tablets
- Waiving wireless voice and data overage fees for all customers for 60 days
- Expanding eligibility for its low-income internet program
- Creating a $10 million fund to support distance learning
- CenturyLink
- Suspending data usage limits for 60 days
- Free speed upgrades for 60 days to schools, colleges, libraries, and governments
- Increasing speeds for residential customers enrolled in plans of less than 20 MBPS

- Free Internet Essentials service for 60 days to new low-income customers
