Funding Intro Session -- Lynchburg, VA

Intro to Federal R&D Funding, Venture Capital, Angel Investors, and CIT's GAP Fund     

For technology start-ups and early stage tech firms, funding your research and commercialization efforts is key to success. The Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) is a state funded non-profit in Virginia with a mission to help support the funding needs of early stage technology entrepreneurs. 

 
CIT is proud to team up with the Harrisonburg and Lynchburg based Small Business Development Centers (SBDC), James Madison University, the Shenandoah Valley Technology Council and the Region 2000 Tech Council in the coordination of these “Funding Intro Sessions”. Each session will include a one hour presentation on Federal Funding and Private Capital funding, followed by Q&A and one on one opportunities. There is not cost to attend, however, advance online registration is requested due to space constraints.

9:00 AM - 9:30 AM: Check-in/Registration  
 
9:30 AM - 10:30 AM:   “Federal Funding Intro:  SBIR/STTR and Federal Funding Assistance from CIT” -- CIT’s Federal Funding Assistance Program supports the efforts of early stage tech firms to learn about and apply to several federal funding R&D grant programs, including the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. Eleven federal agencies provide grants of $150K to $1M to small businesses to perform early stage, high risk R&D.  Over $2.5B is available to small businesses in these programs. CIT provides mentoring, training, guidance, referral support, and small grants to Virginia based tech firms to assist in applying to these programs. Robert Brooke, CIT’s Director of Federal Funding Programs, will lead this session, providing insight into these programs and tips on how to proceed.

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM:   “Private Capital Intro:  Private Financing and CIT’s GAP Fund” --  Venture Capital and Angel Funding are important funding sources that enable certain types of companies and high growth potential technologies to reach their full success. Private funding capital has grown scarce over the past several years as a result of the economy. CIT’s GAP Funds provide small investments into Virginia based high potential companies with appropriate market opportunity and teams. Tom Weithman, CIT’s VP of Entrepreneurship and GAP Funds Director, will present an overview of Venture Capital, Angel Funding, and CIT’s GAP Funds to help you determine if this is an appropriate pathway for your company.
