Innovative Device Allows 3D Imaging of the Breast with Less Radiation

CRCF Awardee from U.S. Department of Energy’s Jefferson Lab, in Newport News, has developed a new device that is capable of providing 3D images with 6x better contrast for breast screening for tumors. This technology has the potential to maintain the same or better image quality while halving the radiation dose to patients. CRCF has invested in this initiative through two awards over the last three years.

CAP Researchers won the Best Paper Award for work on Sequential Pattern Mining at the ACM Computing Frontiers Conference

Researchers from the University of Virginia’s Center for Automata Processing (CAP) recently received the Best Paper Award at the 2016 Association for Computing and Machinery (ACM) International Conference on Computing Frontiers for their work on sequential pattern mining (SPM). SPM is a widely used data mining technique for discovering common sequences of events in large databases. CRCF has invested in UVa’s work on automata processing, including a recent FY2016 award.

CRCF FY2015 Awardee, Dr. Bandyopadhyay develops 'straintronic spin neuron' that may greatly improve neural computing

FY2015 awardee, Dr. Supriyo Bandyopadhyay, and his team at VCU have developed a new type of artificial neuron called a "straintronic spin neuron" that could serve as the basic unit of artificial neural networks, modeled after human brains that have the ability to compute, learn, and adapt. The new artificial neuron is potentially more energy efficient, more robust against thermal degradation, and fires at a faster rate
