Research and Technology Strategic Roadmap

The Commonwealth Research and Technology (R&T) Strategic Roadmap is a comprehensive planning tool the Commonwealth uses to identify research areas worthy of economic development and institutional focus. It provides elected and other officials with priorities in key industry sectors that have commercial promise, that will drive economic growth in Virginia, and that will be eligible for Commonwealth Research Commercialization Fund (CRCF) awards. Beyond this, the Roadmap also helps inform and align organizations across the state, including public and private universities.

Technology sectors eligible for award under the CRCF FY2017 solicitation follow. Eligible sectors reflect their alignment with Virginia's capabilities and opportunities as well as the Administration's priorities.

  • Advanced manufacturing, with particular interest in additive manufacturing, remote sensing and monitoring, and robotics
  • Cyber security
  • Energy
  • Environment, specifically water quality
  • Information technology, with particular interest in data analytics
  • Life Sciences; including biotechnology
  • Unmanned Systems

To accomplish the charge of establishing and updating the Roadmap, CIT is supported by the Research and Technology Investment Advisory Committee (RTIAC) and works in close collaboration with the following individuals and organizations to provide a critical evaluation of industry strengths and strategic priorities, economic development initiatives, and academic and research strengths and strategic priorities:

  • Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP)
  • Regional technology councils
  • Virginia’s colleges and universities
  • Federal labs and other research institutes

CIT continues discussions with industry, academia, the research community, and state and economic development officials. In addition to the industries noted above, regional and other executives have identified strengths and opportunities in aerospace, communications, nuclear physics, and transportation. Modeling and simulation is an important enabling technology for numerous industries.
