As CIT's Director of Life Sciences, Dr. Terry Woodworth is responsible for strengthening life sciences research and development efforts in the Commonwealth.

Dr. Woodworth first joined the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) in 1986 as assistant to the director of its VCU-based biotechnology institute in Richmond. There he worked with life sciences companies throughout Virginia to provide links to university faculty expertise and technical appraisals of project proposals for CIT's grant awards program.

Dr. Woodworth was active in the formation and program development of the Virginia Biotechnology Association (VaBIO) and maintains ties with the biotechnology community statewide. He has also teamed with regional and state economic development groups to provide technical assistance in their life science company recruitment efforts.

A CIT Regional Director from 1995 to 2003, he broadened his clientele to span the entire technology spectrum and has been instrumental in local and regional efforts to encourage the growth of technology industry in the greater Charlottesville and central Shenandoah Valley regions. In July 1998, Dr. Woodworth relocated and opened the CIT Regional Office in Charlottesville.

In June 2003, Dr. Woodworth joined the CIT R&D team as Director, Life Sciences. In this position, he serves as CIT’s leading expert on life sciences-related research, development and commercialization activities and trends, both within and outside of Virginia. From 2003 through 2005, Dr. Woodworth served as Executive Director of former Governor Warner's Biotechnology Commission, which provided strategic action recommendations to the Governor for making Virginia a leader in the biotechnology industry. As a member of the CIT R&D team, Dr. Woodworth is active in identifying and assessing opportunities for developing industry clusters in life sciences and other advanced technologies that map to Commonwealth priorities. He also participates in concept and proposal development for CIT grant and contract opportunities, and provides project management for translational research and other contracted programs for government and commercial clients.

Dr. Woodworth earned a bachelor's of science in biology from Old Dominion University, his doctorate through the Department of Microbiology and Immunology on the Medical College of Virginia campus at Virginia Commonwealth University and he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California at Irvine.
