Dr. Edward Metz is a research scientist in US Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES) in the National Center for Education Research (NCER). Dr. Metz is the program officer for NCER’s Education Technology research grants program and for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Both programs provide funding for the development and evaluation of education technology to improve student learning. IES was established in 2002 as the research arm of the department to advance the rigor, relevance, and usefulness of education research. NCER is one of the 4 centers at IES, and through its grants and contracts provides funding to support research that is intended to improve student outcomes and the quality of education in the United States (http://ies.ed.gov/ncer/).

Dr. Metz earned a Ph.D. in Human Development from the Catholic University of America, where he performed research on the effect of school-based community service programs on adolescents’ civic engagement.  His publications appear in peer-reviewed journals including Political Psychology, Applied Developmental Science, PS: Political Science and Politics, the Journal of Adolescent Research, and Service Enquiry.
